The devil may wear Prada, but what does he drive? Playing the field, the Italian fashion house has jumped into bed with both Audi and Hyundai for its foray into the automotive sphere. The outcome of Prada’s venture with Audi has yet to be realized, but Hyundai has revealed this special edition Genesis Sedan it developed with Prada, previewed last November, for debut at the upcoming home-market Seoul motor show.

The Genesis Prada you see here is a one-off, painted a matte-finish purplish-blue with a white “saffiano”leather interior featuring illuminated floors and door panels, along with 20-inch wheels and an “outer antenna with edge shape.” It’s one of three distinct versions that will be auctioned off for charity, so don’t go looking for your own designer edition down at the local Hyundai dealership. Two weeks ago, Auto Express reported that MINI would be creating a John Cooper Works edition diesel with more than 160 horsepower and improved torque. Now, fellow UK publication Autocar looks to have the details, which includes speculation that the extra oomph will come from BMW engines now used in the 1 Series cars – and they might not just be for JCW models.

According to the report, the white coats at BMW inserted a detuned 2.0-liter diesel that is longitudinally mounted in the 120d into the transverse engine bay of the MINI. The result was a MINI diesel with 40 hp more than the Cooper D, which currently uses an engine that BMW developed with PSA Peugeot/Citroen. 

Autocar also reports that the twin turbo lump from the 123d can be fitted to the MINI, which could be used to create a diesel JCW. If they don’t detune the engine, that would mean a 7 hp drop versus the gas-engined version, but 105 more lb-ft. of twist and better than 40 mpg when the drivetrain isn’t being stomped on.Autocar says that BMW has begun testing the new diesels with an eye on retail sales in 12 months.

Some concept cars are design studies, while others closely preview production models. But as much as we may have hoped, the gorgeous Essence concept unveiled by Infiniti earlier this month at the Geneva Motor Show will remain firmly in the former, as company spokesmen have reportedly verified that the show-stopping show car will not be entering production.

Alright, so that may be no big surprise, but we’re allowed to dream, aren’t we? That doesn’t mean elements previewed by the Essence won’t be trickling down to production models. We certainly hope some of the breathtaking design will find its way into production sheetmetal, and reports suggest that the quirky kink in the C pillar could appear on future products from the premium Nissan division. The long-awaited successor to the flagship Q45, if produced, is tipped to borrow heavily from the Essence’s design, while its concept drivetrain is expected to lead the way for a hybrid M as well. So while the show car itself will remain a glimmering memory, its bits and pieces will, in essence, resurface in future Infiniti products.

With the days winding down until the opening of the 2009 New York Auto Show, Subaru has released the full details along with photographs of its highly anticipated new Legacy, which replaces the outgoing model for the 2010 model year. The new Legacy has big shoes to fill, as the outgoing model offered a compelling package with a sleek design and capable chassis. 

The exterior design of the new model bridges the gap between Subie’s aging flagship model and theconcept car the Japanese automaker revealed in Detroit. The new Legacy also grows an inch longer, and about three inches in each the wheelbase, width and height, in order to offer a more commodious cabin. 

Three engines will be available: A naturally-aspirated four, a revised turbocharged flat-four and the flat-six. The 2.5-liter normally aspirated engine produces 170 horsepower and equal torques, and the fla-six swells from 3.0- to 3.6 liters, now producing 256 hp and 258 pound-feet of torque. But the big news is the revised turbo boxer in between, producing 22 more horses than the outgoing model (now 265 hp) and 17 lb-ft more torque (for a total of 258) from lower revs. Of course, all the engines will offer all-wheel drive (otherwise it’d hardly be a Subaru), but the six-speed manual (fresh to the North American market) and five-speed automatic are joined by a new CVT to keep any of the engines in their sweet spot. 

The interior has likewise been thoroughly revised, incorporating a new voice-command sat-nav and slick ambient lighting. All of this amounts to a modest 50 pound increase in weight, which seems like a small penalty to pay for all the added features.

It isn’t even noon yet here in Detroit, but already it’s been a busy day thick with bailout fallout and new consumer loan guarantee programs introduced by General Motors and the Ford Motor Company.

The Blue Oval has just unveiled its new Ford Advantage Plan, which can be thought of as a riff on Hyundai’s much talked about Assurance Program. Ford’s new initiative will cover payments of up to $700/month for up to 12 months on any new Ford, Lincoln, or Mercury vehicle if the loan holder loses his or her job. 

We hope to learn more specifics about the program soon (conditions/exclusions, etc.), but for now, the program takes effect immediately and runs through June 1. Buyers will be able to take advantage of the program as well as a new round of zero percent financing offers through Ford Motor Credit.

As part of the announcement, Ford is also preparing a new dealership-level assistance program “to assist local charities impacted by the economic downturn,” the details of which will be announced in April. Official press release after the jump.

General Motors has announced a new incentive program that it hopes will encourage people to enter the car buying market again. Called GM Total Confidence, the program has four prongs that includes Payment Protection if you lose your job, equity assistance if you trade in your vehicle later for another one from GM, one year of OnStar and the automaker’s 5-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. We’re already familiar with the last two components of GM’s Total Confidence program, so let’s focus on the first two. 

GM’s payment protection program is much like Hyundai’s Assurance Program in that the automaker will cover your payments in the event that you lose your job. GM’s program covers you for 24 months and will make up to nine payments valued at up to $500/month. According to GM, if you qualify for state unemployment benefits, you’ll qualify for the payment protection to kick in. 

The last element of GM’s Total Confidence incentive program is equity assistance, or what GM calls Vehicle Value Protection. This part of the program will cover the difference between what you owe on your vehicle and its NADA Clean Retail Value when you trade it in for another GM vehicle. The idea is to wipe out any negative equity caused by vehicle depreciation when you move on to your next car. 

The GM Total Confidence incentive program begins tomorrow, April 1 and runs through April 30, 2009, though could be extended if it works and sales go up. You’ll be seeing marketing for the program during the Final Four as well, so keep your eyes open.

After a series of stories surfaced over the weekend reporting the demise of the Lamborghini Estoque, the supercar manufacturer has issued a statement addressing the rumors. According to Lamborghini, the Estoque has not been killed off, but it hasn’t been approved for production either.

The release continues to tow the company line that if a new model is added to the Lamborghini line-up, “a four door luxury performance saloon could be a logical product strategy.”

When the Estoque was revealed in Paris, the 500-horsepower, V10-powered all-wheel drive sedan was hailed as the automaker’s first volume model – a daily driver that could conceivably sell between 2,000 and 3,000 units annually. Speculation of the Estoque’s eminent arrival in 2011 was stoked when the company’s R&D chief Maurizio Reggiani, said that a case was being made to VW’s board and that a mule was currently undergoing testing. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety isn’t waiting around for the federal government to enact tougher roof strength standards for passenger vehicles. The IIHS has created its own new category of roof strength standards that requires a strength-to-weight ratio of 4 times a vehicle’s weight to earn the highest rating of good. Federal standards are currently 1.5 times a vehicle’s weight, with a proposed increase to 2.5 times still pending. 

The IIHS used a batch of 12 small SUV/CUVs as guinea pigs for the new standard, and only four were rated good: the Volkswagen Tiguan, Subaru Forester, Honda Element and Jeep Patriot. The Suzuki Grand Vitara, Chevrolet Equinox, Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue and Mitsubishi Outlander were rated acceptable with strength-to-weight ratios of at least 3.25. The Honda CR-V and Ford Escape achieved a marginal rating with scores of at least 2.5 and the Kia Sportage was rated Poor with a score below 2.5.

The IIHS roof strength crash test is conducted by pushing a metal plate at constant speed against one side of a vehicle’s roof. In order to earn a good rating, a vehicle’s roof must withstand a force of 4 times the vehicle’s weight before reaching 5 inches of crush. Earning the roof strength test’s highest rating will also be a new requirement for the Institute’s Top Safety Pick awards. As a result, the list of winners for 2010 will likely be much smaller than last year’s. Eight of the small SUV/CUVs tested by the IIHS were previous Top Safety Picks, but only three would earn the award with these new standards.

Running television ads. Taking orders. And now, setting up a network of dealerships. Fisker Automotive is starting to act like a real car company. 

The company announced today that it has signed up its first group of 32 retailers. These outlets will be located in 17 states – Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington, Virginia, and Wisconsin – and one Canadian Province, British Columbia (see the full list after the jump). But Fisker isn’t stopping there - the company hopes to have at least 40 dealers in the U.S. signed up by June. Deliveries of the $87,900 plug-in hybrid Karma should begin at the end of this year, and Fisker hopes to sell 15,000 units a year once they get up to full production. 

Like the luxury PHEVs themselves, Fisker vows that their showrooms will make efforts to be eco-friendly, with natural and sustainable materials used throughout, and a solar-powered carport available.

Hyundai has just released info on its plug-in hybrid concept for the upcoming Seoul Motor Show. Called the BLUE-WILL, the concept features a direct-inject 1.6-liter gas engine mated to a CVT transmission and 100kw electric motor. The car features a state of the art lithium ion polymer batter pack that’s packaged with the fuel tank below the rear seats, as well as a trick panoramic roof that integrates solar cells while still being able to see through. The BLUE-WILL also features eco-friendly plastics, with some components, like the headlamp bezels, made out of recycled plastic bottles and other plastics derived from plant extracts. We’re not sure where the plug goes, but Hyundai claims the parallel hybrid can be tethered to a wall socket for extra amps.

The concept’s five-door hatchback body style is striking with criss-crossing character lines on the body sides and a high rear deck lid. The thick C-pillars also turn into the center of the roof, leaving a window above each pair of doors. The BLUE-WILL’s face has an angry look with its forward canted fascia that bends around on each side to blue-tinted headlights sweeping back up the fender. Koreans will get their first look at the BLUE-WILL when the Seoul Motor Show opens on April 2nd, and Hyundai will begin selling its first hybrid, the Elantra LPI Hybrid, in July in South Korea.

Like the Porsche Cayman S Design Edition 1 and Boxster S Design Edition 2 before it, the Cayenne GTS Design Edition 3 shows off what German automaker’s industrial design shop can do. The Cayenne version continues the trend set by the Cayman S and Boxster S with special dark striping on the doors and hood that subtly contrasts with the unique Lava Grey Metallic paint color. The 21-inch SportPlus wheels are also cast in the same dark color and feature this spokes through which the GTS’ braking hardware can be viewed. A roof spoiler, tinted glass and special “Porsche Design Edition 3″ badging round out the exterior accouterments. The interior is finished with lots of carbon fiber trim, black leather and contrasting red stitching, while more “Porsche Design Edition 3″ branding can be found on the tach face, door sill and a placard in the glove box along with the vehicle’s serial number. 

While there are no real performance improvements to this limited edition version of the Cayenne GTS, which is already a capable performance SUV, you do get a sports exhaust and slightly lowered suspension. What may sway buyers more are the Porsche Design accessories that come standard, including a chronograph watch and four-piece luggage set. Only 1,000 examples of the Porsche Cayenne GTS Design Edition 3 will be made, each starting at €79,100 in Europe where they’ll be exclusively sold and $89,900 in the U.S. where only 100 will be sold.

In a move that will likely get California’s consumers in a huff, impending legislation may soon restrict the paint color options for Golden State residents looking for their next new vehicle. The specific colors that are currently on the chopping block are all dark hues, with the worst offender seemingly the most innocuous color you could think of: Black. What could California possibly have against these colors, you ask? Apparently, the California Air Resources Board figures that the climate control systems of dark colored cars need to work harder than their lighter siblings – especially after sitting in the sun for a few hours. Anyone living in a hot, sunny climate will tell you that this assumption is accurate, of course. In fact, legislation already exists for buildings that has proven successful at reducing the energy consumption of skyscrapers.

So, what’s the crux of the problem… can’t paint suppliers just come up with new, less heat-absorbent dark paints? According to Ward’s, suppliers have reportedly been testing their pigments and processes to see if it’s possible to meet CARB’s proposed mandate of 20% solar reflectivity by 2016 with a phase-in period starting in 2012, and things aren’t looking good. Apparently, when the proper pigments and chemicals are added to black paint, the resulting color is currently being referred to as “mud-puddle brown.” That doesn’t sound very attractive, now does it? Windshields, backlights and sunroofs are also slated to get reflective coatings starting in 2012.

Anyone who uses a satnav regularly knows the feeling of looking at the directions being given – or actually trying to follow them – and wondering “WTF?” Try an experiment and plug one of your regular destinations into your satnav and see what it spit out; seven times out of ten you’ll wonder “Why would it tell me to go that way?”

A driver in England has once again followed the instructions from his car’s GPS system as if he were Abraham heeding instructions from The Almighty. Headed to a friend’s house, the driver was told by his GPS to go up a steep walking path, and he did so. Luckily the path was lined by a fence, because when the driver crested a hill, he slid down the path and into the fence, which stopped him from going over a 100-foot cliff. 

Fortunately, he was unhurt, although charged with careless driving. Never forget: trust your good sense before you trust your satnav…

Lamborghini said it was going to make just 20 examples of the Reventon. And it did. But the raging bull didn’t say anything about following that run up with some Reventon roadsters. At least, that’s the talk coming out of the UK, where “a very reliable source inside Lamborghini” has dropped the news that nine – that’s right, nine – Reventon Roadsters will be forthcoming, and they’ll be even more powerful than the hardtop. 

The roofless Reventons will get the same engine used in the Murcielago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce, with 670 hp and 487 lb-ft. Not that you would expect anything else, but it will also get a price bump: €1,2 million ($1,633,975.25 USD). That means you – or some high-net-worth person you know – will pay a $634,000 premium to add 20 hp and lose a roof. And join a club with only eight other members…

AMG has been involved in Formula 1 for well over a decade now, starting with a Mercedes-Benz C36 AMG serving as the safety car back in 1996. Most recently, the SL63 AMG earned the spot last year, and it is returning for 2009 to set the pace at each F1 race this year. To ensure that it’s capable of performing its duties in any situation, the car has been fitted with quite a few upgrades, including an upgraded coilover suspension system, a three-stage traction control system, massive composite brakes – 15.4 inches up front and 14.2 inch in the rear – and additional coolers for the oil, transmission, coolant, and power steering. The overall weight of the car has also been reduced by 485 pounds thanks to carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic body components and the removal of the convertible top mechanism. Last month, Crane Cams announced that it had shut its doors and told all 280 of its employees not to come back the next day. Shortly afterward, the storied automotive aftermarket parts company indicated that it wouldreopen after the restructuring process had taken place. That’s apparently not the case after all.

LiquiTec Industries has issued a press release stating that it has been contracted to liquidate all of the assets of Crane Cams. The sale will include everything that the company had owned, including all of its unsold products, machinery, raw materials, trademarks and patents. Bids are currently being accepted, after which all of the unsold goods will be put up for auction.

This news comes after speculation that Crane Cams would be purchased by a company called Scorpion Performance. We’re not sure what happened to that deal, but we’ve placed a call with Scorpion in an effort to find out. Press release after the jump.

Another Chicago Auto Show, another mildly refreshed Scion tC Release Series. For those keeping track, this is Release Series 5.0, but unlike previous limited-edition models, the modifications aren’t limited to a new hue and set of rims. The best bits are found beneath the gloss black paint and matte black 18-inch wheels, where Scion seems to have thrown the entire TRD parts catalog at the tC RS 5.0. The tC benefits from lowering springs, a rear sway bar, sport muffler and badging, along with an optional rear lip spoiler. Inside, the blacked-out TRD theme continues with a leather-covered steering wheel, black seats and TRD-badged floor mats. The monochromatic scheme is broken up with red stitching inside and red stripes on the multi-spoke rims. 

A total of 2,000 R.S. 5.0’s are slated for production, and sales will begin in March. Pricing seems reasonable, with the TRD-infused package adding $2,300 to the base price of the standard tC. It’s a decent car to be sure, but considering the tC is entering its fifth year on the market with very few updates, Scion needs to do more with its coupe. Stay tuned for live shots from Chicago.

It might seem like an odd pairing at first, but we’re sure Honda’s Mugen accessorized Insight hybrid will find a few buyers in its home market of Japan. Included in the exterior body kit are a sports grille and lip spoiler up front, a set of ground effects for each side, a reworked from fascia and huge wing out back along with optional window visors. Inside, a full set of sports mats is available along with a drilled aluminum set of pedals. 

There isn’t much to speak of underhood besides a high performance oil filter (seriously?) and lubricants, but there is a sport silencer kit complete with a triangular tip. The best bits, though, are definitely in the handling department, with two sets of alloy wheels in either 15- or 16-inch sizes joining a sports suspension package that includes a new set of springs and dampers that reduce ride height by 20 millimeters. So far, there’s been no indication that any of these accessories will make it Stateside, but there’s always eBay.

Cars are such an easy target for politicians looking to bolster their green image. The latest is Oregon Governor Theodore Kulongoski, who has had the Speaker of the House introduce a bill that could make many aftermarket parts unavailable. 

Tires are the main aim of the bill, which seeks to prohibit parts availability if there are choices that decrease greenhouse gas emissions. It amounts to a back-door fuel economy standard, which is the jurisdiction of the federal government unless you’re California –and even they need a waiver. The prospect of fitting Pilot Sports to your Geo Metro will be out the window if H.B. 2186 finds traction, and it could stick you with zero alternatives based on some myopic metric like rolling resistance. Putting our legislators in charge of what equipment should be fitted to our cars doesn’t strike us as the brightest idea. K&N’s Chairman of the Board Jerry Mall took second place in the Silver State Classic Challenge Nevada Open Road Challenge in his K&N Evo in the Speed-Stop Z2Z Challenge on Hwy 490. Every vehicle in that competition was equipped with K&N products.

K&N decided to use a large cone shaped air filter with a carbon fiber top (part number RP-4600) for the Mitsubishi after trying different shapes and sizes of intake tubes with different filters. “We found out that the factory intake worked well and it did not change the horsepower gains,” said Bert Heck, K&N Performance Kit Manager. “The K&N air filter is the primary reason for the power gain. It increases air flow while protecting the engine from harmful debris.”

After we’ve had to adore the turbocharged Skyline GT-R from afar for nearly two decades, Nissan is officially selling its game-changing super coupe on U.S. shores for the first time. In a late night ceremony at a Universal City, California dealership, Daryl Alison took delivery of the very first GT-R sold Stateside – by the automaker. The event included all the pomp and circumstance you’d expect, including an appearance by notorious hot-shoe, Steve Millen. Alison, a long-time Nissan fan whose garage has housed a number of sports cars, including several 350Zs, was grinning from ear-to-ear while he got a rundown on this black GT-R in Premium trim. Not surprisingly, Alison paid sticker price ($72,900) for his GT-R, likely to be the first and last to do so as owners begin taking delivery of their own GT-Rs in the following weeks.

Title: Euro License Plate

Orlando Performance Motorsports LLC now carries Euro License Plates! Get that extra attention and points at the next car show with these plates.  We sell either used German Plates from 1994-present or custom plates with your own writing (Number of Characters available on each plate varies). These items are shipped directly from Germany and take roughly 2-4 weeks to get but packages typically arrive in 8-10 days.  Below is some information regarding German Plates.   More information on these items will be posted on the blog in the next few days.

Product Information

German car number plates show the place where the car carrying them is registered. Whenever a person changes their main place of residence in Germany, or buys a new car, they are required to buy new number plates. Number plates can be bought which are valid all year round or between 2 to 11 months within any 12 months. This allows to change between summer and winter cars, such as a convertible and a sedan/saloon without having the time and money wasted for de- and re-registering. Emission test (front plate) and vehicle safety test (rear plate) stickers are also attached to the plate. The expiry date can be figured out as following: The year is in the centre of the sticker and the number on the uppermost is the month. The black marking on the side makes it easy for the police to see the expiring month from the distance. Imagine a clock, then the the marking shows the same position as the face of the clock does. For example the black marking is on the left side, so it is the ninth month (or 9 o’clock) and hence the expiry date is 30th September. The colours are repeated every 6 years. The lower sticker is the official “seal” of registration — indeed, at the beginning of the 20th century, plates were authorised with ink and a stamp. Motorcycles carry only the rear plate. The post-1994 German number plate format The present number plate format, used since 1994, uses black print on a white background and first provides information about the country where the car is registered, in the form of a D (for Deutschland) on the blue strip on the left, like many European Union number plates. After that, there are between one and three letters which show the city or region where the car is registered. DD stands for Dresden, D for Düsseldorf and MST for Mecklenburg-Strelitz, for example. These units usually coincide with the German districts, in few cases an urban district and the surrounding district share the same letter code. Hanseatic cities may have an H in front of them, e.g. HH for Hansestadt Hamburg or HRO for Hansestadt Rostock. The number of letters in the city/region prefix often reflects the size of the city: one letter for a large city (B= Berlin or H=Hannover) two for a medium-sized city (DD= Dresden) or three for a small city (MST=Mecklenburg-Strelitz). After the location name come the emission test and vehicle safety test stickers, then one or two usually random letters followed by one to four usually random numbers. The total quantity of letters and numbers on the plate is never higher than eight. One letter with low numbers are normally reserved for motorcycle use since the plates space of this vehicles is smaller. Car owners can personalise their plates by choosing certain numbers or letters instead of the random ones at the end. For example, people living in the town of Pirna might choose PIR-AT 77, “Pirat” being the German for “pirate”; another favourite is BAR-BQ 777 for Barnim. Various combinations that could be considered politically unacceptable — mainly due to implications relating to Nazi Germany — are disallowed or otherwise avoided. The district Sächsische Schweiz uses the name of its main town, Pirna, in its code PIR, to avoid the use of SS, the name of the paramilitary organisation; similarly SA is also avoided. In 2004 in Nuremberg, a car owner was refused a number plate beginning N-PD because of the connection to the political party, the NPD. Example of banned combination (”NS”) which has been issued accidentally.Other banned combinations include the Nazi abbreviations HJ (Hitlerjugend, Hitler Youth), NS (Nationalsozialismus, National Socialism), SA (Sturmabteilung), SS (Schutzstaffel) and KZ (Konzentrationslager, concentration camp). Some registration offices have overlooked this rule by mistake, however; there are a few cars registered carrying prohibited codes, such as B-SS 12. Certain types of vehicle bear special codes: Vintage cars (known in German by the pseudo-English expression Oldtimer) have an H (historic) at the end of the plate, such as K-AA 100H Cars with seasonal number plates have two numbers at the end of the plate indicating the months between which they are registered to drive, with the licence being valid from the start of the upper month until the end of the lower month. Official cars such as police, fire fighting and municipality vehicles do not carry a letter after the sticker, such as M-1234. Police cars usually start with the number 3, example: S-3123 Until 2004, vehicles which do not have to pay the usual taxes (for example ambulances, tractors or trailer for boats) were green print on a white background. Vehicles which have not been registered (because they are being repaired, for example) have to carry short-term plates valid only for five days. The code starts with the numbers 04, e.g. DD-04000, and the plate has a yellow strip on the right showing when they are valid. The date is listed numerically, on three lines, reading day, month, year, with two digits each. Car dealers’ plates are in red print on a white background, and the code begins with 06. Diplomatic plates have the digit 0 (Zero) on the left instead of the registration location code. The military uses old style non-reflecting plates with a dash between the two circles. The German flag is shown, instead of the blue EU strip. Military plates use the letter Y, rather than a city indicator (no large German city name starts with a Y). After the Y comes a six-digit number (or five digits for motorcycles), for example Y-123456 Military vehicles which are used by the Nato headquarters in Germany use the same design as the Y-plates except they carry the letter X followed by a four-digit number, for example X-1234 Some branches of the federal government and Bundesländer’s governments use the abbreviations of their names instead of a city code. Example: the Technisches Hilfswerk (German Federal Agency for Technical Relief) uses its abbreviation THW, so the plates read like THW-12345 The federal border police (Bundesgrenzschutz) uses the code BG (BG-#####) instead of the local code.   The Order Process: (1) Your Order is Recieved. Today, the 2009 Corvette ZR1 officially stepped up the global war for Nürburgring supremacy, as General Motors development engineer Jim Mero drove a stock ZR1 around the Nürburgring in a time of 7:26.4. That’s significantly faster than the 7:29 lap set by the Nissan GT-R. We can’t wait to see what the rest of the world’s supercar competitors are gonna do now to step up their game.

GM assures us that the lap time was set by stock ZR1, fitted only with extra safety and communications equipment. Everything else, from the production-spec Michelin Pilot tires, to the factory-spec ride height and suspension settings were untouched. Even the fuel was normal pump gas, though that stuff is still probably like $500 per gallon in Germany, right? None the less, this is the same spec car that people all across the country are going to buy at an inflated price, and inevitably hide away in their garage only to be driven on Sundays. Let’s hope some this isn’t the last we’ll see of the ZR1 ripping up a racetrack.

Hundreds of European GT-R buyers, who have put down large down payments on cars that they won’t see until next spring at the earliest, have received a small consolation gift from Nissan: a tape measure.

The highly cool GT-R-embossed little box is to be used to measure their heads, so Nissan will know what sized helmets to prepare for them when they show up for their free lessons in how to extract the best from their new steeds at Silverstone or (where else?) the Nürburgring.

That’s one good reason to buy from Nissan, rather than from the numerous grey importers of surprisingly cheap second-hand R35s that are already hitting Japanese websites. Thanks for the tip (and pic) Philippe!

Drive@earth. Sounds an awful lot like shorthand for “run this bizatch into the ground,” but Mitsubishi has an official explanation for its new tagline. Launching this summer in Japan, “Drive@earth” will be used by Mitsubishi in all markets. The tagline, which looks like an intern tacked it below the logo in Microsoft Word ten minutes ago, is meant to carry dual meanings. The first thing Mitsubishi wants to convey is the idea that its automobiles, and their four-wheeling legacy, allow people to visit virtually any point on the earth.

Secondly, and possibly in diametric opposition to the first point, the slogan signals a commitment by the automaker to environmental responsibility. It’s a fine line to walk between traipsing across the globe and not destroying sand dunes or clubbing baby seals while excreting vast amounts of greenhouse gasses, but Mitsubishi is committing to continued development of its environmentally friendly technologies, like the iMiEV that would be an ideal commuter vehicle for those poor slobs stuck in gridlock. No word on whether the new tagline signals the end of Mitsubishi’s run of TV spots using music cuts that get stuck in your head and portray people having more fun than a flume ride. Mitsubishi announced today that it will unveil the production version of its Lancer Sportback and Lancer Sportback Ralliart at the Paris Motor Show in early October. The Lancer Sportback is just what it sounds like, a five-door hatchback version of the recently redesigned Lancer model that’s on sale around the world. Mitsubishi already revealed in its latest global business report that it would be selling the Lancer Sportback in the U.S. as well, but the only time frame given was sometime after the introduction of the Evo X, which is already on sale here.

In Europe, the Lancer Sportback will be powered by a 1.5L or 1.8L four-cylinder, or a 2.0L turbodiesel, while the Sportback Ralliart will feature a turbocharged 2.0L MIVEC engine producing 237 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque that’s mated to Mitsubishi’s Twin-Clutch SST transmission. It will also feature an Active Center Differential to help send torque to the wheels that can use it, as well as two-piston front brake calipers. Sounds like the same setup we saw on the U.S. version of the Lancer Ralliart sedan that debuted at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show in January. We were particularly smitten with that car, so adding some more interior cubes and a fifth door should only serve to increase our anticipation for Paris.

The next generation Acura NSX is still two years away. But the cars with which it will compete are currently moving the goal posts further and further toward the horizon. By the time the NSX arrives, it could need rocket boosters and a hyperdrive. Or maybe it already has them?

The NSX prototype that we recently showed you lapping the ‘Ring has recently been clocked unofficially by KGP spy photographers doing a 7:37 lap around the ‘Ring in traffic. It’s no secret what kind of cars live in that 7:30 bracket. Seeing as how Honda CEO Takeo Fukui wants the NSX to lap the ‘Ring faster than the GT-R, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that Nissan’s supercar has done it officially in 7 minutes, 29 seconds.

Remember, though, when the Nissan GT-R was casually timed by trackside reporters, they clocked it doing a 7:38, and well know now what GT-R can really do when pressed by a professional. If the NSX mule and it’s rumored 550-hp 5.5L V10 are really that good already, then the car looks in good shape to deliver on Honda CEO Fukui-san’s command to beat the GT-R and LF-A.

As a bonus, KGP also managed to snap the interior of the NSX prototype. While not revealing much, we can see its gauges and the paddle shifters for its rumored 8-speed transmission. Also note that these new pics of the NSX prototype were taken while it ran that 7:37 lap.

The current BMW 5 series is a bit awkward in appearance, but it appears that the propeller brand will be getting away from the Bangle-inspired creases and concavities of the current model with the car’s next redesign. Caught testing on the ‘Ring recently, the next-gen 5 series is sporting a new grille with nostrils large enough to drive a 1 series through. Seemingly inspired by the mondo nose of the BMW CS concept, the new 5 series will also apparently sport a smoother overall shape that gets us back to BMW sedans of the past. We dig it, at least in prototype form. Check out more angles in our high-res gallery of spy shots below.

The extrovert of the entire Lexus lineup, the IS-F isn’t light on visual or actual horsepower. Japan’s Wald Tuning hasn’t let that fact get in their way of releasing the Sports Line Black Bison bodykit. Wald’s setup adds some visual aggression through an increase in the number of strakes and vents, as well as a trunklid spoiler. Doubtless, this get-up will add weight, possibly offering contradictory real-world performance from a vehicle that certainly looks like it should be fast. The amped-up visuals also help distract from the controversial fender gills, and the Black Bison package for the IS-F manages tack-on without being overly tacky. Well, maybe just a little tacky.

By now we’ve all seen the myriad number of spy shots showing Acura’s prototype for the 2010 NSX running around the Nurburgring in Germany. We’ve also heard the news that Honda CEO Fukui-san wants his NSX to beat any lap times at the ‘Ring set by the Nissan GT-R and Lexus LF-A. Thanks to our friends at BridgetoGantry.com, we now have video of the NSX prototype on a short stretch of the ‘Ring, and fortunately the audio quality is good enough that you can hear the wail of whatever’s underneath the car’s hood. As we’ve mentioned before, what will power the NSX is at this point speculation, but most reports say it will be a 5.5L V10 with iVTEC producing prodigious amounts of horsepower, somewhere in the neighborhood of 500+. ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (AP) — Scott Kalitta died Saturday when his Funny Car burst into flames and crashed at the end of the track during the final round of qualifying for the Lucas Oil NHRA Super Nationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

The NHRA said the 46-year-old Kalitta — the 1994 and 1995 Top Fuel season champion who had 18 career victories, 17 in Top Fuel and one in Funny Car — was taken to the Old Bridge division of Raritan Bay Medical Center, where he died a short time later.

Kalitta’s Toyota Solara was traveling at about 300 mph when it burst into flames.

The Palmetto, Fla., resident started his career at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in 1982. His father, Connie Kalitta, was a longtime driver and team owner known as “The Bounty Hunter,” and his cousin, Doug Kalitta, also drives competitively.

“We are deeply saddened and want to pass along our sincere condolences to the entire Kalitta family,” the NHRA said in a statement. “Scott shared the same passion for drag racing as his legendary father, Connie. He also shared the same desire to win, becoming a two-time series world champion. He left the sport for a period of time, to devote more time to his family, only to be driven to return to the drag strip to regain his championship form. … He will be truly missed by the entire NHRA community.”

Kalitta had most of his racing success in Top Fuel, highlighted by his series titles in 1994 and 1995. He retired from racing in 1997, sitting out most of two seasons before returning for a 10-race campaign in 1999. He sat out three more seasons following that brief stint and then returned again in 2003, joining cousin Doug as a second driver for the family’s two Top Fuel dragsters.

Kalitta started his pro career in Top Fuel in 1982, running limited events for four seasons before moving to Funny Car in 1986 for his first full season of competition. He returned to that category full-time in 2006.

One of only 14 drivers in NHRA history to win in both premier nitro categories, Kalitta’s last victory came in Chicago in 2005 in Top Fuel. He had a runner-up finish two weeks ago in Chicago, his 36th career NHRA final-round appearance.

He’s survived by his father, wife Kathy and sons Corey, 14, and Colin, 8.

NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Brad Keselowski — a native of Rochester Hills, Mich., about 20 miles away from Kalitta’s hometown of Mount Clemens — learned the news from a television report.

“That really hits close to home,” Keselowski said after winning the pole position for Saturday night’s race at the Milwaukee Mile in West Allis, Wis. “[He was] a friend of my family’s, and I send my thoughts and prayers out to him. That’s tough to hear.”

The BMW GINA Light Visionary Model that was seen via video being installed in the BMW Museum in Munich last week has finally been revealed, and the futuristic design study shows how BMW designers are thinking outside of the box when it comes to the materials that make up a car and also how the car relates to the driver. GINA stands for “Geometry and Functions in ‘N’ Adaptations”, which basically means that designers from both BMW and BMW Group DesignworksUSA were allowed to throw out the rulebook. This is most evident in the GINA Light Visionary Model’s outer skin, which is made entirely out of textile fabric that’s pulled taut around a frame of metal and carbon fiber wires. The skeleton of the car is controlled by electro-hydraulic devices and can actually move and change shape beneath the fabric skin. For instance, the headlights of the concept can be exposed or hidden by the car’s skin just like blinking eyes, and the hood opens from the center as the fabric parts to expose the engine. This idea extends to the interior, where BMW designers have made visible only those instruments that are required at a certain time, while the rest of the time the same fabric interior “blinks” them out of view. The car itself looks somewhat like a Z4 Roadster, though after viewing the extensive gallery of high-res images below, you’ll be amazed how much the outer skin looks like normal sheetmetal. Until, that is, you see how the doors open. They lift up in a semi-scissor fashion and since there are no exposed hinges, the fabric artfully binds up as the door swings open. While the design of the GINA Light Visionary Model is very Bangle-esque with concave and convex surfaces intermingling everywhere you look, it looks appropriate and natural here. The car is very much a concept, meant more to inspire BMW’s own designers and engineers rather than excite the public, but now we’re excited about shape-changin, fabric-covered cars, anyway.

A Little Update on the Nissan 350z. We have just Installed an Injen Exhaust System and Injen Air Intake. About the South Florida Get Together (SFLGTG)

The South Florida Get Together was created in January of 2001 by South Florida VW enthusiast Justin Miller, who was looking to organize a group of VW and Audi enthusiasts that could casually meet every couple of months. From those meager beginnings of three VW Passat owners hanging out in a parking lot in Deerfield Beach came one of the largest and fastest growing VW/Audi events in the United States.

Today, the South Florida Get Together is held annually and attendance has soared to over 1200 people and 600 cars. The event was once a small informal get-together held wherever the group could find a spot, and today it is a day-long event held at major venues in sunny South Florida. From the humble crowd of a few VW/Audi enthusiasts, the event has now drawn hundreds of VW and Audi enthusiasts from all over the world. This an area we hope we do not have to say a great deal about. Security will be provided by Gforce and will employ off duty officers. Do something dumb and there is no arguing with us about it. COLD AIR INTAKE SYSTEMS A Cold Air Intake is traditionally longer and in most cases extended behind the bumper cover so that it can ingest direct air that is both cooler and denser. In addition to more direct air, the longer plenum achieves higher torque gains as well as impressive horsepower figures. Depending on the complexity of the plenum route, the Fujita Cold Air Intake may come as a 1 piece or 2 piece intake system. Different diameters, filters, and bends are all key factors of the R&D process of each Cold Air Intake. The in-house Dynojet is the final judge of which intake configuration will make it to production. Air/Fuel ratios are also an important factor in testing the Cold Air Intake, ensuring that safe and near factory levels are maintained in order to not trip any electronic sensors on the vehicle. SHORT RAM INTAKE SYSTEMS A traditional underhood intake, also known as a Short Ram Intake, usually follows the same path as the stock intake system. There are some distinct differences between the stock intake and the Fujita Air Short Ram. A few of these differences include replacing the factory intake plenum with an aluminum plenum, eliminating resonators, air box, drop in filter, and replacing it with an open filter element. These key differences allow the vehicle to bring in more air into the intake chamber and create more horsepower and torque. Vacuum and in some cases air mass sensors, are still maintained and incorporated into the Fujita Short Ram Intake. Since a vehicle is constantly moving (except during traffic or at a light) heat soak will be of little issue since the car will constantly be bringing in fresh air. In addition, studies have shown that the material used to build the intake system has shown no loss of horsepower due to an intake being rubber, aluminum, ceramic coated, anodized, etc. 6061 T6 ALUMINUM ALLOY CONSTRUCTION CARBON PLATED T-BOLT CLAMPS CNC MACHINED SENSOR FITTINGS Each Fujita intake system is made with 6061 T6 Aluminum Alloy. After each application is bent and inspected, we polish it for an extremely bright finish. Carbon Plated T-bolt Clamps are used in our applications due to their strength and reliability. All of our T-bolt Clamps either meet or exceed the SAE Spec. J1508. CNC machined air mass sensor fittings are used to ensure proper air/fuel ratios throughout the power curve. Each sensor is carefully engineered for accuracy. HOSE TECHNIQUES SILICONE HOSE TIG WELDED BRACKETS SUPER FLOW HIGH PERFORMANCE AIR FILTER We use Hose Techniques® Silicone Hose w/ Dupont Nomex reinforcement to provide stability during both extreme hot and cold conditions, -65°F(-54°C) to +500°F (+260°C) TIG Welded brackets are used in conjunction with Rubber Vibration Mount Dampening to stabilize the intake system from unwanted stress during load. Each Fujita Intake System comes with a Super Flow High Performance Air Filter™ designed to maximize efficiency without compensating air filtration.

DC Sports 12/14/07 - Camburg BITD Terrible’s Henderson 400 Race Report

Coming into the last race of the BITD season, points were close and championships could be won or lost in a blink of an eye. Camburgs approach to this race was to finish at all costs while being conservative. With Camburg only sitting 7 points out of 1st place in the Mini TT 7200 class, the pressure was on the class leader #7223 Daniel Bolton to finish and finish well.

Coming into the drivers meeting, everyone was notified of course changes since the day & night before the race had some heavy rains and flooded many sections especially the dry lake bed areas. Jerry Zaiden driving and Scott Zindroski navigating suited up and got into the truck to find out the intercom system and race radio were not working do to the extreme moisture. Lined up at the start, they were given the green light and were under way.

The first 10 miles was riddled with flooded sections, muddy trails and poor visibility. Jerry set a cautious pace, especially with Scott having to give him hand signals to help navigate. Trucks were slipping and sliding in every direction, almost to the point of getting stuck in the flooded areas. Once past pit 1 the field began to spread out and a rhythm was set. This section of the course was extremely rocky and headed towards a narrow trail that went up and over a mountain. Even this early in, cars and trucks were scattered throughout the desert with flats and chassis damage. Coming into the mountain trail the Camburg Edge was slowed by a class 1 buggy that was stuck behind a 10 car that wouldn’t pull over. Miles later both faster vehicles were able to pass once the trail widened. Coming into the pit 3 section the dirt got very loose with the whoops already becoming really deep. As they headed back towards the start they hit the detour that re-routed them away from the now flooded Jean Dry Lake Bed. Coming into the start finish area and navigating through the infield Jerry pulled into the pits.

With a splash of 11 gallons of fuel they were back on their way. The start of the 2nd lap had a faster pace as the course was becoming more familiar and the trails some what improved with the race traffic prior. Lap 2 was pretty uneventful with Jerry focused on handing the truck over to Jason Campbell at the end of the lap with zero problems and interruptions. After all, with zero communication and not knowing where everyone else was at on the course, the race had the potential to go in either direction for the team. The later portion of the course opens up and they were able to gain some ground on the field.

Coming into the pits at the start of lap 3, Jerry jumped out and Jason got in while the pit crew topped off the fuel cell, cleaned the mud off the numbers and mirrors and did a quick visual inspection. With Jason taking over the driving duties and still no radio & intercom communication, Scott had to get Jason up to speed with the course till he found his groove. The Ranger Edge was working flawlessly and was able to cruise the rough trails back into the infield of the start/finish area.

Jason stopped into the pits for a little fuel and was back under way and focused on the finish 81 miles away. By this point in the race most of the slower classes were finished as they did fewer laps than the faster classes. Jason set a pace that was moderate yet didn’t beat up the truck, which could easily been done on as rough as a course as Henderson was. It by far was one of the most technical of the year because of the terrain and weather. Midway through the last lap they came up on a team that unfortunately was sidelined and took their yellow stuck card to the next BITD checkpoint official. Safety and tracking is always a priority for BITD and its racers. As the sun lowered and the temps dropped, Jason and Scott entered the infield for the last time and crossed the finish line on the same Nitto tires they started the race on and in great shape to hand over the truck to the new owners for the 2008 BITD season in a few weeks.

The Camburg Edge finished 5th in class and 22nd overall in 8hrs 43min 12sec. Bolton Racing finished 6th in class 21 minutes later and was able to hold onto their narrow points lead to take the BITD Mini TT 7200 Championship with Camburg only 5 points behind them in 2nd place for the year.

  Piloting the Lucas Oil Honda Civic, Richard Holdener blistered the salt by running a two-way average of 207.5 mph. Running in the Blown Gas Competition Coupe class, the turbocharged Civic bettered the old record (set in 1991) of 196.124 mph by over 11 mph.

  Bonneville records require the vehicle to make two time speed runs. The official speed is the average of the two runs. The Lucas Oil Honda Civic ran 206.2 mph in the first run and 208.7 mph in the cool morning air on the second day. The Civic was clocked at nearly 210 mph exiting the 5th mile. Holdener was quick to credit extensive dyno and top-speed testing in preparation for the Bonneville event. According to Holdener, “We spent hours on the dyno making sure the motor was both powerful and reliable. We also made numerous 200+ mph speed runs at our top-secret Nevada test facility (appropriately labeled Area 52). Running a FLUIDYNE High Performance radiator, BFG street tires, Eibach coil-over suspension and 17 psi of boost, we ran over 211 mph at Area 52. That was an exciting ride!”

ACT’S TECHNOLOGY Finite Element Analysis ACT uses powerful Finite Element Analysis (FEA) computer software to test and evaluate products in a virtual environment. The FEA software accompanies the latest CAD and 3D solid modeling software used by ACT’s research and development department so that numerous design alternatives can be considered long before coming to market with a new product. ACT’s FEA software mechanical stress, heat transfer, thermal stress, vibration and buckling analysis under virtually any load condition which can help identify potential problems in a particular design. Custom Data Recording Press ACT uses a computer operated data recording press to cycle, test and record pressure plate clamp load, working range, release load and release travel. Each pressure plate is load tested and cycled to ensure parts meet ACT’s strict quality standards. Belltech

Over 20 years ago a small company in Fresno, California had an idea to build the “best performing” lowering suspensions for the Chevrolet pick up. Fresno had been a haven for lowered vehicles and trucks were in abundance. Trucks were being lowered but their suspensions were terrible and not very roadworthy. Springs were either replaced with new ones not necessarily meant for the application and even worse they may be cut or heated with a torch at the local muffler shop to give the lowered stance that was cool. The stance looked good but the ride was terrible. Beginning of Americas Sport Truck Craze Belltech’s design staff had a better idea! Why not build a spindle where the wheels are higher but all of the rest of the front end geometry stays the same? In fact that’s just what they did and the drop spindle that launched the Sport truck craze in America was born. To go along with the drop spindle the rest of the truck suspension needed to be addressed also. Shackles, hanger kits, lowered coil springs and flip kits soon followed. Keeping with the spirit of the “best performing” suspension the Belltech staff designed and created these components using superior materials and designs. The result made Belltech the most asked for and successful truck suspension brand in the industry. Continuous Growth As time went on more and more enthusiasts joined the Sport truck phenomenon. Soon Ford, Dodge and import truck owners wanted to join in on the look and style of Belltech equipped vehicles. This started a whole new market of truck owners that could now do something different and up to date for their brand of truck. Belltech designed and created suspension components for these applications as well and the company grew accordingly. With the suspension lowered there was one more factor that needed to be considered. We had to take a look at the suspension dampening system (the shocks). Stock shocks worked well with the stock suspension but by changing the ride height the shock geometry was affected. That’s when the properly designed Nitro Drop Shock line was designed. Constantly keeping up with the ever challenging Sport truck enthusiast Belltech took this program a step further with the introduction of the Nitro Active shock line using monotube technology to further improve ride quality. Belltech now offers a choice of shocks the better Nitro Drop and the best Nitro Active. No matter what your lowered truck suspension needs are, Belltech is there with products to satisfy every desire.

Belltech’s success in the late ‘80’s and ‘90’s made it possible for the company to grow from a modest beginning, to a larger manufacturing facility with a satellite warehouse and finally in 2003 to the current 115,000+ sq. ft. operation located in Sanger, California. The Sanger facility has made it possible to expand every aspect of the operation. Additional space for both Engineering and R & D are making it possible to create and develop new products more efficiently and timely. Some of the results relating to these new transformations are the development of new products like the GM Colorado / Canyon lowering Ball Joint and the new line of Ford F150 drop spindles.

In early 2005 Belltech and its sister company Suspension Techniques joined the team of KW automotive North America, Inc. KW automotive North America, Inc. allows Belltech to continue its growth in product development with the inclusion of dynamic race proven suspension design. The Centerforce era started in the early 1980’s when Bill Hays, founder of Hays Clutches in the 1950’s, created the technologies behind Centerforce. Clutches bearing his name are found on thousands of high performance vehicles around the world. With the desire to engineer a solution to the ‘sticking over-center problem’ of diaphragm clutches, Bill Hays designed and patented the Centerforce Weighted Clutch System. His new design increased pressure plate clamping force while maintaining easy pedal effort and would not allow the diaphragms tendency to ‘stick over-center’. Later in the decade, he invented, designed and patented the Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch system and was awarded The Best New Performance Street Product Award by SEMA and Hot Rod Magazine’s Best New Performance Product Award for the Dual Friction design. As a member of SEMA since 1977 Centerforce has been nominated for the prestigious PWA “Manufacturer of the Year” many times, winning the award in 1998. Also in 1998 Bill Hays was inducted into the SEMA Hall of Fame for his work in the performance aftermarket industry. Centerforce has also received many other new products and packaging awards throughout the past three decades and strives to continue the legacy. Due to growth throughout the decades, Centerforce had out grown it’s two California based manufacturing facilities located in Garden Grove and Midway City. An expansion was needed. While on a business trip in 1994, Prescott, Arizona was discovered. Arrangements were made and a new 47,000 square foot manufacturing facility was built. This move was nearly transparent with over 80% of the Centerforce team moving with the company. The continuation of product research, development and testing went on unaffected. New patents have since followed as well as continuous improvements to the product offerings. Today Centerforce has over 1,700 different clutch applications available to the automotive enthusiast. HOW IT ALL BEGAN…

The Challenge
In the early days of the automotive performance industry, you either ran what was available, or you fabricated something you thought met your needs. Such needs were the building blocks of this industry, and it was through the efforts of many that we have the automotive aftermarket, but it was through the work of one name in particular to which many in the industry owe a great debt, and that name is Edelbrock.

The Beginning
Vic Edelbrock Sr. was born in a small farming community near Wichita, Kansas in 1913. His father supported the family comfortably as the owner of the local grocery store. When the Edelbrock grocery store burned down in 1927, Vic left school at age 14 to help support the family. He had a natural talent for mechanics. His first job was at an auto repair shop where he developed his skills as an auto mechanic. When the Great Depression hit Kansas, the young Vic Edelbrock looked to the prosperous West for a new home.

A New Start in California
In 1931, Vic migrated to California to live with his brother. It was here that he met Katie, who became his wife in 1933. With his new brother-in-law, Vic opened his first repair shop on Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills. The business flourished and in 1934 he moved into his own shop on the corner of Venice and Hoover in Los Angeles. Bobby Meeks, who retired in 1993, started with Vic at this time and became his loyal assistant. Between 1934 and the start of the war, several important events occurred. Vic Sr.’s reputation as an expert mechanic helped his business grow and he moved his shop three times during this period. Vic and Katie’s only child, Vic Jr., was born in 1936. In 1938, Vic Sr. bought his first project car… a 1932 Ford Roadster. This car was a turning point in Edelbrock history. It was Vic Sr.’s entry into the world of “hot rods” and it inspired the design and manufacture of the first Edelbrock intake manifold.

The “Slingshot” Manifold & El Mirage Dry Lake
When Vic bought the roadster, he joined with Tommy Thickstun to design the “Thickstun” manifold for the flathead. When Vic wasn’t happy with the performance, he designed his own aluminum intake manifold. It was called the “Slingshot”.

The Slingshot was a 180° manifold for a Ford flathead using two Stromberg 97 carburetors. This was the first product to feature the famous “EDELBROCK” name. Before the war, Vic produced about 100 of these flathead Ford manifolds. Vic raced and tested his new manifold on his 1932 Ford at Muroc Dry Lake, 80 miles northeast of Los Angeles (where Edwards Air Force base is today). Vic became a consistent winner with his modified roadster at racing speeds of 112 mph. Vic would drive the Ford to the dry lakes, remove the fenders and the windshield, then race the car. At the end of the races, he would re-install the fenders and the windshield and drive it home.

The roadster became an important part of Vic’s product development. He would install his parts on the roadster to determine how well they would perform. One of Vic’s ideas was modified factory cast iron “Denver” cylinder heads which incorporated a special high-altitude design featuring higher compression. Vic would fill and mill the head for a further increase in the compression, gaining even more power.

The New Beginning
Other racers were continually impressed with Vic’s consistent wins at the dry lakes. The requests he received for his twin carb manifold were the driving force behind the opening of his own performance parts business. Three weeks before Pearl Harbor and the advent of World War II, Vic was clocked at the speed of 121.42 mph in his fenderless ’32 at Rosamond Dry Lake. During the war, Vic shelved his racing activities and used his machinist skills for the war effort. His work included welding at the Long Beach shipyards in Southern California and hand fabricating parts for aircraft. Vic’s war-time experiences increased his perception of what he could build with the right machining tools. At the end of the war, he purchased his first building to open a machine shop and repair facility at 1200 North Highland in Hollywood, CA.

Thorough Testing Delivered Results
It was after the war that Vic designed his first aluminum racing heads for flathead Fords. Like the Slingshot, these heads were well received. The business was on the way to becoming more of a performance parts shop than a repair shop. The first catalog was printed in 1946 with the name “Edelbrock Power and Speed Equipment” across the front cover. This catalog included Edelbrock heads and intakes as well as pistons, steering wheels and crankshafts. At this time, Vic was committed to running his business and participating in his favorite sport… midget racing.

Midget Racing…A Success Story
Before the war, Vic bought his first midget and knew it wouldn’t be his last. In 1946, he bought a midget built by D.W. McCully. But it was the third midget he purchased that would become part of racing history. The 7th Kurtis Kraft midget, which the company still owns, was purchased later that year. With Bobby Meeks as head wrench, they toured the Southern California tracks, racing up to six nights a week. Vic’s winning team included such greats as Perry Grimm, Walt Faulkner, Billy Vukovich and Rodger Ward. Vic was now known for fast flathead Fords and race-winning midgets. History was made when Vic’s V8-60 equipped midget broke the winning streak of the Offy-equipped midgets. With Rodger Ward at the wheel and nitromethane in the fuel, #27 beat the Offys in the first and only V8-60 win at the famous Gilmore Stadium. Vic was the first to use nitromethane as fuel, and needless to say, his competitors had no idea what that strange smell and color was coming from the exhaust!

The First Engine Dynamometer
With a solid business now developing, Vic bought one of the performance industry’s first engine dynos in 1948. With this 200 HP Clayton dyno he was now able to get actual data to gauge the effectiveness of his products. This dyno allowed Vic to prove that his designs not only won races but made measurable performance gains. By now, Vic Edelbrock Sr.’s equipment was on almost every winning car on the dry lakes and the midget tracks.

Vic’s First Purpose-Built Shop
Business flourished and in 1949, Vic moved into his first purpose-built shop on Jefferson Blvd. It was 5,000 sq. ft. and equipped with a small machine shop, repair bays, engine dynamometer, a small stock room and office space. In this new facility, Vic expanded his business by designing more cylinder heads, more intake manifolds and even racing pistons for several different applications. AND HOW WE EVOLVED…

Reputation Grows as Edelbrock-Equipped Cars Set Records
In the early 1950s, dry lakes racing activities expanded to include Bonneville. Edelbrock-equipped cars continued to dominate. The first single engine streamliner to go over 200 mph was the Edelbrock-equipped Bachelor-Xydias So. Cal. Special. Don Waite, former Vice President of Engineering at Edelbrock from 1990-95, raced an Edelbrock-equipped 160 mph 1927 Model-T Roadster. When Don decided his Roadster needed to go faster, he worked with Vic Sr. and Bobby Meeks from 1950 to 1952 to streamline the body and build a 304 cubic-inch flathead. Now called “The Edelbrock Special” the roadster was equipped with an Edelbrock 4-carb intake, Edelbrock heads and pistons. Using nitromethane, this 1927 Model-T went 192 mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats.

During this time, the business continued to expand. The Edelbrock catalog grew as Vic expanded his line of cylinder heads, intake manifolds, flywheels, pistons, cams and adjustable tappets for Fords, Mercurys and Lincolns. His catalog also included parts from Paul Scheifer, Ed Iskenderian, Harmon & Collins and Ed Winfield.

Breakthroughs
Vic Sr. began dyno tests on the brand new small-block Chevrolet engine in 1955. Several power-producing manifolds were the result, the first being the three-carb intake manifold that was featured on the cover of Hot Rod magazine. The six-carb Ram Log manifold for the street and strip was the next development. Then in 1958, Vic managed an industry first by getting one horsepower-per-cubic-inch from a 283 cid small-block Chevy with the new Cross Ram manifold. This breakthrough led Edelbrock to develop manifolds for Pontiac and Chrysler engines as well.

From Father To Son
At the early age of 49, cancer took the life of Vic Edelbrock Sr. He was a man held in high esteem and it was a sad day for the aftermarket industry and for those who loved him. The year was 1962 and the Edelbrock Equipment Company was handed over to Vic Jr. and a group of loyal employees, most of whom had been with Vic Sr. since the beginning. They knew what it took to continue the traditions Vic Sr. had begun.

A Great Crew
Vic Sr. left behind a great team of very talented people. Bobby Meeks, Don Towle and Robert Bradford were on hand to assist Vic Jr. in continuing his father’s dream. In 1964, a good friend named Bob Joehnck saw an opportunity to develop an intake for a small-block Chevy. Vic’s response was, “No, the factory already makes a manifold.” He changed his mind a week later. The C-4B manifold was another turning point for the Edelbrock Equipment Company. The “golden age of the 1960s and 1970s” brought about the Tunnel Ram, Tarantula and Streetmaster manifolds. Vic Jr. was looking towards the future of the industry. From 1971 to 1974, he served as President of the Specialty Equipment Marketing Association (SEMA) to educate both the public and the legislators in Washington to the benefits of a strong and legal performance parts industry.

The ’80s and ’90s brought about a new direction as Edelbrock Corporation moved into a more diverse product line with carburetors, camshaft kits, valvetrain parts, exhaust systems, engine accessories, fuel system parts, cylinder heads and more.

Edelbrock Today
Edelbrock Corporation has over six locations: four in Torrance and two in San Jacinto, California, totaling over 600,000 square feet. Headquarters include: R&D; manufacturing; tech support and more. Less than a mile away the Exhaust and Suspension Division design and manufacture high quality components using custom built equipment and state-of-the-art testing facilities.

Our Aluminum Foundry and Motorcycle Division, where we manufacture carburetors for motorcycles, is located in San Jacinto. Our sand-cast foundry has been called “the most state-of-the-art foundry west of the Mississippi.” In 2007 we will be adding a new Permanent Mold and Heat Treat facility next to our existing sand cast foundry, an over 8 million dollar commitment to “Made in USA” products and performance.

In October 1999, we moved our warehouse into a new Distribution Center. All shipping and receiving operations were relocated to provide room for the expansion of our cylinder head, water pump and manifold manufacturing area at the main facility.

The APR GTR35 Widebody Aerodynamic Kit for the Infiniti G35 Coupe has redefined tuning for the executive level sports touring coupe. Offering an increase of +45mm on the front and +50mm on the rear of each side of the car, the APR GTR35 Widebody Aerodynamic Kit provides the G35 Coupe a whole new level of high speed traction. This increase in size accommodates front wheel sizes of 20”x10” with 285/25/20 profile tires and rear wheel sizes of 20”x12” with 325/25/20 profile tires.

To enhance stability, the APR GTR35 Widebody Aerodynamic Kit includes a carbon fiber front wind splitter that is designed as a front undertray. The optional 67” (1,700mm) GTC-300 G35 Spec adjustable rear wing adds downforce on the rear wheels to increase rear-end stability.
